In my psychotherapy practice in New York City I've discovered that many couples have the happily ever after expectation and are surprised when their marriage or relationship is not like the fairy tale.

Many of us of us have ideas in our heads about love from earlier experiences that may not have been satisfying. Often these old ideas or experiences cloud our judgement about what is happening in our current relationships. And sometimes there is pressure from the outside -- crisis at work, parenting, family and in-law issues, becoming step-parents.

It can happen to any of us -- those everyday stressors we bring home get taken out on the wrong person. It leaves you both feeling awful.

Maybe you are not getting enough attention, conversation, physical intimacy as you feel you should be getting. Sometimes we are so focused on what we are not getting that we don't really see what we already have. I think we all could learn a little about putting our partner's happiness and satisfaction up front and center and take the focus off of "but I'm not getting what I want"! You'd be surprised when you take the focus off of your negative feelings, how much you might actually start to feel better.

The focus of my marriage counseling and relationship counseling with couples is to:

be willing to compromise
identify negative patterns
make family and relationship decisions together
